I just got back from the holiday practice with the age groupers and rather than crank out the 7.000 yards during practice, we did something fun but challenging.
We did a mini workout first of about 2,500 yards then after that we played golf. No, not the real golf, to cold in Ohio for that, it was swim golf.
Each lane was a team, consisting of 6 swimmers. The challenge was to take your best 50yd free time +1. So, if best time of season thus far was 23.0, if I swam 24.0, I shot par and got zero points for team, if I went up and did say a 26 then it was +2. If I went under any where in 22's then its a birdie and team received -1 point. We played 9 holes, or basically 9 50s sprint. Seems easy but with just about 5 minutes in between 50's towards the end it can be hard to keep par.
The incentive was to have team under par, if team was, then you were done with practice early. If you shot over par, well, they had 50x25's fly waiting for them.
Anyone else out there do fun things like this to keep practices fun and challenging?
Happy New Year,
greg
ps-my team was under par :-)

I saw an event at a recent meet that looked like fun.
It was a 'Skins' event. This is the way it worked.
All swims, start from block, 50's @ 2:00
Heat 1: Swimmers in all eight lanes, two slowest eliminated
Heat 2: Swimmers in lanes 2 thru 7, two slowest eliminated
Heat 3: Swimmers in lanes 3 thru 6, slowest swimmer eliminated
Heat 4: Swimmers in lanes 3 thru 5, slowest swimmer eliminated
Heat 5: Top two fastest swimmers lanes 4 and 5 go head to head
It was really interesting to see the strategies the swimmers used to rest, etc. within the 2 minute interval.
