With a background in sprinting, I never gave any thought to races longer than 200 yards or meters. While swimming 1800 yds (to approximate a mile), I began to wonder why a race distance of 1650 yards exists. Was the intent just to approximate a 1500 meters? Is there a reason for selecting the length of distance events? I apologize in advance if I've missed some other obvious reason (go easy on me).

1650 yards is almost exactly the same distance as 1500 meters (there's only a few feet difference).
