Kicking w/ Fins?

What are the advantages or disadvantages of kicking with fins? Also, what are the advantages of kicking with fins on one's side as opposed to back or stomach? What percentages of a workout is typically dedicated to kicking? My swimming is more for fitness and and a means of cross-training (than winning medals at meets). It seems kicking with fins provides another means of conditioning one's legs. But how will this effect my swimming as I enjoy a couple of open water events each year? And if anybody happens to know, how does kicking with fins influence other activities, such as hiking, xc skiing, etc? Thanks in advance!
