Hi All. Just started back swimming again, after about 10 years off...during that time was running and rowing. Now after injuries and set backs, have found the water to be releaving, theraputic, and an awesome challenge. Since I'm about 13 pounds overweight, am wondering if there are meets in the winter season, giving me this time to get into swim shape, and loose the extra pounds. Although I've looked on the sites, there is no info past listed for Winter. Is there even a Winter race season?
Thanks! (and it's great to be back!).

Well, I'm the queen of the overweight swimmers and put a little fear in a couple of triathletes at lap swimming. They called me the energzering bunny since I could go on intervals of shorter rest than they could. I'm not much with speed, unlike some of the swimmers that came back about 25 years plus, I lost a lot of speed as a youth. *** and Free and back about 14 to 20 seconds off as a youth and fly about 30 seconds in the 100 yards or meters.
Keep this in mind .In Italian we say there are no ugly Italians, just funny looking. But not ugly. In swimming there are no heavy, swimmers . Maybe pleasntly plump but not heavy.:) :)
Depends on where you're located. There are at least two active fall/winter/spring groups (Y-masters and US Masters). Both recently wrapped up their winter seasons with their championships.
USMasters does have some summer meets. You might check with your local Y or even your local college team to see if they have any masters clinics or training over the summer.
Where I live--there is a year-round masters level team at the University of Pittsburgh. There has also been some outdoor masters groups in both the eastern part of pgh and in the southern part.
don't worry about losing the weight before participating--many of us aren't as thin as we'd like to be! We're all adults so what's a few pounds among friends?:p
Hi Jerrycat,
Glad to hear you are back after a 10 year layoff. I took 5 years off before I started back, and I am glad I did. Masters is a lot of fun. People are really friendly and supportive.
If you are interested in swimming in meets, go the this website; http://www.ohiolmsc.org/.
The site has a listing of the teams in the Cincinnati area. Here you will find out the latest meet information and results in the Cincinnati area. Also the site does include all meets taking place with the Great Lakes Region (OH, MI, KY, IN, IL, WI).
Winter season starts in the Cincinnati area about the first of October and runs through May. The Short Course National meet take place around the 2nd week of May. The summer season is June through of August. The Long Course National meet takes place about the 2nd or 3rd week in August.
If you need any furhter information, please feel free to contact me.
