Ridding Fear of Deep Water

Please, can anyone tell me how to get myself use to swimming in deeper water? I can tread water for a few minutes, I can swim a whole lap without stopping, I can breathe almost correctly, but I can't for the life of me get myself to get in water any deeper than 6 feet. I tried to go in 7 feet and freaked out and grabbed onto the lap lane and somehow got back to 6 - I dont remember how though I just know I was afraid. Any pointers or suggestions?

Good morning! I'm not a swimming coach, but my advice would be to get used to swimming comfortably in shallower water, such as 6 ' or less, like you are now. When you can easily swim longer distances, such as 600 yds or longer, then you should maybe venture out further into deeper water. Until then, there's no point of stressing yourself in the pool, especially if you're not that strong of a swimmer yet. I do understand what you are saying about the deeper water- when I first come back to swimming after a break, I usually suffer some sort of vertigo when I swim in water 7' or deeper. This usually goes away after a few minutes. In fact, I find that I swim 'better' in water 9' or deeper. In any case, just get used to swimming first and let the rest take care of itself! peace...
