Hi, Am concerned about the chlorine in the water darkening the skin. Which is a good way to avoid / control it ? Any names of lotions or any technique or any way to achieve this is welcome and is appreciated. Jea

hey- i never heard of chlorine darkening the skin, although i'm sure that we can all attest to the damage it does to our suits! the only suggestion i have is to rinse with cold-ish water before hopping in the pool- this is meant to help decrease the amount of chlorine that is absorbed by your suit, so maybe it'll help your skin. do you swim indoors or outdoors?

Since chlorine is akin to bleach, wouldn't it lighten any colors it affected?

yeah, I was just going to say, if you are swimming outdoors its not the clorine... you are getting a tan!

I've heard of chlorine lightening hair color (that must explain the gray hairs I've been getting :D ), but all it's ever done to my skin is sometimes make it itch. I just make sure to take a warm soapy shower after swimming to get the chlorine off.

There are special shampoo's that you can use. I use Swim Out. They also have Swim Out soap bars. You usually have to order this stuff online. I also take two showers after swimming. One in the gym locker room, and one steamy shower when I get home. It usually takes two showers to get the chlorine off.

Hey, Thanks for the suggestions. To complete the thread of discussion : - Elaiana , actually i swim indoors. - Shaky, your logic is fun but had never occured that thought to me earlier. - laineybug , nope , i swim indoors - KenChertoff , soapy water suggestion will try out. - Courteous Swimmer , guess should try out the extra shower too Most of all thank you all for your suggestions :) Jea
  • Almost forgot what I do to combat Chlorine: I use Ultra swim Chlorine Shampoo, but I also use this on my face and body. The missus seems to think it makes a scent difference, and I notice my skin is not as tight. Moisturizing soap is sometimes used too (Dove). HTH, Chris

  • I have heard taking a shower before swimming is beneficial b/c the body soaks up water (the pruning effect). If you do this in a shower first, you will not absorb as much Chlorine. I have not personally tested this theory, I am much too impatient to get into the pool.
