When doing laps - how do you swim straight instead of swimming from side to side>

I swim in an outdoor pool year-round. When I do backstroke I take note of a palm tree or a parked car and try to keep in line with it. Otherwise I swim down the black line on the bottom of the pool or to one side of it if I am sharing the lane and circle swimming.
