Is swim coach worth $353,518?

In a world where most swim coaches are hugely undercompensated, it is refreshing to see someone pushing the other end of the envelope. You will note in the article that his programs benefit in the area of 4000 swimmers a year. Swimming could use a whole bunch more coaches emulating his successes.

Well, if someone can make that kind of jack doing what they love, more power to them!

If every community had a program like this, swimming would be huge! It just shows you what a little incentive/motivation can do.

Why not if there is enough money around. Swim coaches don't make the greatest money on average. Dave Salo of the Irvine Nova Aquatics has to also coach a community college team . Most USA coaches also do either high school or college coaching besides coaching either a national team or age group team. Like the newspaper story stated it has brought a lot of sucess to that team. In the 1970's. teams built a national reputation by having facilties that were built after 1965 and having several different pools like Mission Viejo did and maybe it the 21st century it has to do with paying the coach more money so he or she doesn't leave.

Its great that Pete can make that type of money and its about time. Major sports are not the only place that type of money can be made. The experts in the article need to take a hike. This is way any organzation should run even for a non-profit. Reward the success of you people and it keeps the commitment of your people. :p

Heh, bovine bingo. The person who did that fundraiser must've been a UC Davis alum. For him to live in Cupertino/Saratoga, he would need a considerable salary as homes are in the million dollar range. Cost of living is much higher here, so compensation should be too. I'm glad that there are some boards which aren't afraid to build their program and retain talent.

If power company and airline executives were compensated by performance, then they would owe money to the stockholders. This coach has brought this program from 200 swimmers to 4000? That's an amazing performance. Of course since we have a progressive income tax system he is paying taxes on his salary. Of course I am a school teacher and if I successfully educate all the children in my classes I will get $32,000 a year. I'd also get the same amount of money if I didn't educate them. If more children decide to go to the school where I teach because of my reputation, my reward will be....bigger class sizes.

This is great. Well deserved. What is a Quick or Kinney worth to Stanford? They should get at least as much as a professor of a major department. Many teachers in California make in the 70K to 100K teaching high school and Jr. college when they have seniority. I wonder what the Nobel winners at Cal Tech make? How many students do they actually teach? The one thing I learned taking the ASCA leadership and administration schools were that many head coaches have all the skills of a CEO and CFO! In fact those schools were directly responsible for me getting 5 raises in 18 months at my work as a manager at a power plant. The executives thought I walked on water. I took the leader ship course from Pat Hogan. His program at Meklenberg is a little smaller than DeAnza at 800 swimmers, but he deserves a huge amount for the number of Olympic swimmers produced. Like someone stated, there are areas in California that a two bedroom 1000 sq ft house goes for $800,000!!!! So compensation must match the surrounding areas. Traffic is so bad in some areas that people sometimes live 80 miles away from their work. That absoloutely does not work for a swim coach who often does a 5 am workout, a noon workout and a 3 to 6 pm workout. Some how i feel if Emmett were coaching in DeAnza he would be the first coach over $500,000. Emmett, you are the MAN!
