I keep thinking about asking this, but always forget. Since getting back in the pool when I can due to my work, surgeries, and just life...a couple years ago I noticed I burp a lot during my minute of rest and sometimes during a lap. Does this happen to anyone else? btw - I was finally able to get back up to 1800 yards during my lap swim a couple weeks ago 😄🏊*♀️

I bet that's it. Whey causes stomach issues wiht a lot of people, but it is usually gas, rather than burping. That said......is there a reason you are drinking it before, rather than after, your workout? They are often referred to as "recovery" drinks, as your muscles need protein to help recover after a workout. Personally, I each greek yogurt with granola about 30 minutes before I swim. The only reason is drink the protein shake (which is just water and the sugar free mix) is because I was using it as a pre workout. I don’t eat dairy or meat. So my protein levels were not enough to surpass my goal of 1800 yards like I did today with 1950 yards!! I suppose I can try to not drink it tomorrow and see how it goes and if I have the natural strength to make it thru my swim?

Kari - good to know and yes, it is much more significant when I do hard sets and am underwater. But I’ve been above water the last week and just on a kickboard. Trying to keep my sore ear out of the water.
  • You need complex carbs before the workout, and protein after.

Protein is building blocks for cells and tissues.

Geez...this is why I should NOT listen to the 22 year old meat head at th Nurtrishop! Usually I will eat a couple eggs, English muffin, and some mozzarella cheese for breakfast. If I remmeber, I’ll make a couple peanut butter on whole grain crackers. But I forget 9 1/2 times out of 10!

  • That seems like it would be plenty of energy to get you through a workout two hours later. Heck, I workout first thing in the morning (5a) and all I have prior is a bowl of cereal :P

Its actually detrimental because your body then spends lots of energy breaking it down. Try to take protein within about 30 min. of working out - that's when it will be most beneficial. Carbs before you work out - I grab a piece of whole wheat bread on the way out the door at 5am and also a couple of swigs from my sports drink bottle (I use scratch but others work fine too)
