Help, not in shape for my"taper meet"

Between a torn rotator cuff and subsequent surgery I have swum in no meets in 2018. I have been OK'd to swim at the SPMS meet Nov 30-Dec 2 (my last chance for times this year). I was only OK'd to swim full stroke 2 wk ago. It was very hard to be motivated to workout hard doing only kicks and one armed swimming. My repaired shoulder has pretty good ROM(the Dr says great ROM, but it is not as good as my "good" shoulder and my L arm is still smaller than my right.) I have been doing modified USRPT as it is self limiting and touted as not needing to taper with. I am not in the shape I want to be in, but I am finally motivated. Since i am nearly 70, I am not sure that I wouldn't benefit from a taper, but with limited time i doubt a full 3 wk taper is the best idea.Thoughts and recommendations?

Great news! And congratulations on the Top Tens. See you in Mesa. :)
  • Way to rip it up, Allen! Can't wait to hear how you do in Mesa!
  • Update, I just got back from the SPMS SCM meet and did much better than I expected. I was hoping to get at least one Top Ten time to keep my streak of 38 years in a row in Top Ten going. It looks like all 3 swims, 50, 100, 200 BR should TT. I could feel my lack of conditioning in the 200, and really felt the fact that I had not done any sprinting in a year before the 50 in the 50(totally "spun my wheels.") The 100 surprised me, not as fast as last year, it was much faster than expected, 1:21.89. That is currently the top time in Event Rankings. I'm really happy about that race. My shoulder seemed to hold up well. Now to get ready for Mesa.

When I predicted that, "it's likely the meet will go just fine" I was 100% confident it would, but a 1:21 SCM BR, good grief, that's way better than "fine", that's excellent! Good work, and be sure to send a holiday card to your surgeon.
  • As per your stated age, mine is 72 1/2 , I would keep doing reg. workouts till a full week b4 the meet then, taper.
  • The SCM preliminary TT results are out. I went to the SPMS meet to try to get Top Ten. I had made TT for 39 years in a row and didn't want to stop my streak. All 3 of my BR races made TT(preliminary) so that is now 40 years in a row. The 100 BR time is likely AA. Yes, I surprised myself. Thank you for the support.

WooHOO, King Frog! :cheerleader: You are still the king of the pond! I am happy to hear you recovered so well from your surgery and are back in top form. CONGRATULATIONS! :applaud: :chug:

You might not be the only person who has achieved this, but the list has to be small. Congrats!
  • Top ten with your back ground of injuries is great!
