Between a torn rotator cuff and subsequent surgery I have swum in no meets in 2018. I have been OK'd to swim at the SPMS meet Nov 30-Dec 2 (my last chance for times this year). I was only OK'd to swim full stroke 2 wk ago. It was very hard to be motivated to workout hard doing only kicks and one armed swimming. My repaired shoulder has pretty good ROM(the Dr says great ROM, but it is not as good as my "good" shoulder and my L arm is still smaller than my right.) I have been doing modified USRPT as it is self limiting and touted as not needing to taper with. I am not in the shape I want to be in, but I am finally motivated. Since i am nearly 70, I am not sure that I wouldn't benefit from a taper, but with limited time i doubt a full 3 wk taper is the best idea.Thoughts and recommendations?
Allen - YMMV, but do USPRT until a week out and then drop-taper from Monday to Thursday, as follows:
Take Sunday the 25th off
Go 100% on Monday ... of whatever you were doing, distance and speed-wise as the following week
Go 75% on Tuesday ... of distance/effort/speed
Go 50% on Wednesday ... of distance/effort/speed
Do your typical meet warmup on Thursday
RACE Friday
Of course, if for some mad reason you've entered the 1500 on Friday at SPMS, all bets are off:afraid:
Oh ... and full disclosure, I'm a slow-twitch distance guy who never, ever did a 3 week taper. My max is 10 days, so adjust as necessary.
But, assuming you're focused on the 50 to 200 ***, I'd keep the majority of your USRPT repeats to 25s, with the occasional set of 50s.
And, more info, I trained with this method above for Indy Nationals in my last 3-4 weeks this year and was focused on the 200 IM/200 fly/400 IM and only did USRPT repeats of 50s. I wasn't stellar in my times, but it worked out well enough.
That looks workable. Thank you.
