Improving Breaststroke Pulldowns

So recently Caeleb Dressel just broke the All American record (50.03) and from watching his race, I saw that his pulldowns were much longer both time and distance wise than anyone else (his feet were past half the pool after he pulled). So I kinda came to the conclusion "wow pulldowns are so important in 100 scy breaststroke." So what i'm trying to get to is how can I get better at pulldowns? Is there some drills/workouts that you could do for a more improved pulldown?

  • Breaststroke pullouts are pretty much about two things in my opinion: 1) Raw strength - Shoulders, triceps and lats for the pull itself, core for the dolphin and to keep the body stable. 2) Timing of the dolphin kick - Some people are better with the kick before the pulldown, some people are better with the kick simultaneous with the pulldown. It's definitely a feel thing, no hard and fast rule for that - if you watch a heat of elite breaststrokers, you're more likely to see half and half each way than anything else.
