How do you use challenges to motivate you?

Hello fellow swimmers! I'm curious to know how you use challenges that arise in your training or in your life to help motivate you along your swimming journey. These could be challenges that you have faced in life, or difficulties arising from your daily training conditions (water temps, sharing the pool with many different swimmers, pool closures, etc). I know that most of us have a story to tell here, so I'm looking forward to hearing yours if you are willing to share!

  • My story is somewhat similar to Sumorunner's, in that 15 years ago I also had heart valve replacement surgery. Going through open-heart surgery gave me a heightened sense of my own mortality and the desire not to put things off and make every day (& workout) count. At 63 and with a mechanical aortic heart valve, I feel so lucky and blessed that I can still do this stuff. I loved getting a great endorphin rush after swimming a 200 IM at practice this morning. I know the day will eventually come when I can't do this anymore and I'm OK with that. My only regrets in life have been things I didn't do, not the things I tried. Mark
