craazy elbows!

I am new to masters after a 30-year break from age-group swimming (& any kind of swimming for that matter). I've had several swims recorded & to my surprise, my strokes are not perfect! Anyway, one thing I wanted to throw out there is: what do you do with your arms as you initiate your back/free turn to keep your elbows from poking straight up out of the water? Not only does it look ridiculous, I'm sure it slows things down a bit. Is there a 'swim thought' I can have to keep this from happening. It feels like I have my arms glued to my sides, but what I'm feeling isn't what's happening. I love being back in the water & am very interested in improving technique; Nationals qualifying in free & back events oh so close... thanks
