Swimming in sewage in Rio

I wasn't sure if this should go in the open water section or here but it is about swimming.I just read this-bigstory.ap.org/.../ap-investigation-rios-olympic-water-rife-sewage-virus and am worried for our open water swimmers. What a terrible predicament, work for years to go to the Olympics and then get really really sick. This is a black eye on the IOC,who like FINA, is more interested in politics and patronage than athletes.

  • If people are getting sick just from sailing or rowing ON the water, just imagine what the consequences of swimming IN that water will be.The good news (?) is that the open water swim is off Fort Copacabana on the ocean-side and not at Lagoa Stadium the rowing venue. They had a test event triathlon last week and they’ll have a test marathon swim event in 2 weeks at Copacabana. I guess we’ll have a better picture of water quality and its effect on the athletes later this month.
