Sorry for this question, but my crawl feels so off -- ***, back and fly are fine, but when I swim crawl, my kick is awful (ex runner of 30 years), my arms drag rather than pull, hence, I often feel like I'm suspended in the water, rather than moving through it. I've done all the TI drills, lots of kick drills, etc. I noticed that after breathing, if I make sure to get my head back in the water before my hand enters, it seems to keep me more balanced. Watching videos, it seems like some swimmers do the opposite. What is the right way? Thanks!
Breathe early and return the head early so you are looking back down before the hand goes in. I think you get a better initial pull if the head is back in line with the spine.
