I have been swimming with the old style speedo's for a couple of years, mainly because I was going through jammers every couple of months. I have had my speedo for about 2 years, but I just lost it at the YMCA. I ordered a new one online and am stuck swimming with regular trunks for a few workouts.
I was wondering if using my trunks as a drag suit is good, and if so what kind of work out are they good for?
I usually swim between 5,000 and 6,000 yards a 4-5x a week. I do a lot of distance swims, and mix in shorter interval sets.
By trunks do you mean board shorts?
I would recommend to mix it up. You are doing large distances with a lot of extra resistance. Sometimes I will wear a drag suit for half of my workout and then take if off and just swim in my swim brief. The difference, for me, with and without a drag suit is huge.

I would not recommend using board shorts to swim long distances as it messes with you kicking technique
