I had a excellent workout this morning with a club 250 miles away. In the locker room, people were talking about summer nationals. One guy who was in my lane and seemed around my age talked about being in great shape for short course Nationals 2009 and mentioned his time in a distance event. Funny, it was the same time I did in that event at that meet. I didn't say anything, thanked everyone for the workout and camaraderie and left. Getting home tonight, I looked up the results for that meet. Yep. A guy from that club, in my age group was in that event, the 1000. We finished .6 apart.

I like to think I would have taken that opportunity to try to make a personal connection, such as, "Hey, my team hosted that Nationals. I sure hope you enjoyed your visit to the Fresno Metropolitan Area!" or even, "Oh, I swam that event too. I'm _________."
  • I usually try to keep a low profile when I swim with other teams. I never know exactly how I fare with those who are waiting to get in the water. One of my most interesting experiences was in Albuquerque. I was walking out to workout, wearing my suit. Some people came over and said, "the fast lanes are over there..." pointing to the other side. Then I said, "so the middle of the pack is about here?" And they said, "yea, but you should be over there." All this without me even being wet. Then I ended up in the same lane with one of the outspoken guys, and I think he was faster than me. Lesson is...especially with swimming, you shouldn't interpret the way someone looks as an indication of their speed ;)

I woulda dropped the towel... ran around and yelled Who's the winner NOW!!!!!
  • But, who was the one who was 0.6 faster? The answer to that dictates the response.
  • But, who was the one who was 0.6 faster? The answer to that dictates the response. Except he didn't know at the time. I probably would have done exactly the same as you did, Fresnoid. Including, of course, looking up the time afterward... :)

I was just going to make some snarky comment that involved Fresnoid strutting around the locker room and towel-snapping the other guy had it been Fresnoid who was the faster of the two. Naturally, a more conciliatory approach would've been required if the tables were turned. ;)

If it was me, hearing someone near my times I would ask for a race after practice.

But, who was the one who was 0.6 faster? The answer to that dictates the response. He was 4 seconds ahead of me at the 500 & I finished ahead by .6. I knew without checking results that I would have been the one ahead because the only one in our age group who beat me in that particular meet was the gator that Unruh keeps bitching about. edit: That doesn't mean I was fast. I finished 2nd berhind a guy who did a 500 split request then a 500 warm down.
