Could you form a medley relay using only blood relatives?

Well?
  • Definitely!!! My daughters are excellent at all strokes except ***; my son happened to be a *** stroker!!!! I'd have Lindsay doing back, Rob at ***, Sarah at fly, and that would leave me doing free!!!! This would be my dream team medley relay!!!!!!!!!!

Yup - Mom, Dad, Brother, and me. I think we would probably go with my mom for the backstroke, me for the breaststroke, my brother for the fly, and my dad as the free. My parents could both pull off the free and the backstroke, but maybe not the others. My breaststroke is stronger than my brother's so that would probably be the best lineup. It would be fun to actually do this someday, if we're geographically compatible. :)
  • You may want to check this out. Has been happening for a while in Mission Viejo. 4th of July weekend. www.usms.org/.../EventEntryForm-2013030810103920454.pdf That sounds like so much fun! Sadly, even if we could afford a trip all the way to Mission Viejo, our kids are not in USA swimming. I'm hoping that maybe in the next couple years we can get the oldest boys on a USA team, but right now it's not in our budget. If we do, we'll have to save up and take a vacation trip out there or something. That would be a blast!
  • Yes -- a slow one. Sounds like fun. ages from 30 to 67 !

My immediate family has insufficiently many to make a relay, even counting non-competitive swimmers. I hope to rope another family into teaming up.
  • Not exactly a relay, but it gives me a good excuse to post this photo. The USMS webmaster and his brothers have been doing the Chesapeake Bay Swim for 25 years. I believe among the five of them they've done 81 crossings. This photo is from 1988. Can you guess which one is the webmaster? :) Yes, he's the one who just hit you on the head for posting his photo :)
  • Possibly, but the relay team would have to include kids.

Megan and I were there!
  • My sister Jill and I did a mixed medley with our parents in 2000: 2000 Long Course National Championships - Baltimore Mixed 160-199 200 LC Meter Medley Relay =============================================================================== 160-199 Worl: # 2:01.22 8/23/98 Ttex-Usa S WENCEL, D GUTHRIE, B WENCEL, S NEILSON-BELL 160-199 NATL: * 2:01.22 8/23/98 Ttex S WENCEL, D GUTHRIE, B WENCEL, S NEILSON-BELL Team Finals Points =============================================================================== 15 Montgomery Ancient Mariners 'B' 2:27.41 1) Roddin, Jeffrey H 31 2) Roethke, Jill 30 3) Roddin, Hugh J 58 4) Roddin, Ruth A 57 1:10.53 2:27.41 The Wolf family did a mixed medley relay at this same meet. They were in a different age group, but had the EXACT same time as us: 20 Plano Wetcats 'A' 2:27.41 1) Wolf, Tom 46 2) Wolf, Mary-Jo 38 3) Wolf, Joe 44 4) Wolf, Kim 20 1:13.47 2:27.41 And technically not a "blood" relay but last year my wife Julie and I and my parents did the mixed medley at both Greensboro and Omaha. Here are the Omaha results: 2012 Long Course National Championships - Omaha Mixed 200-239 200 Meter Medley Relay ================================================================================== USMS Record (N): 2:02.32 8/15/2005 SAN DIEGO SWIM MASTERS Pipes-Neilsen, Karlyn Krattli, Caroline Lautman, Scott Van Baalen, Vinus Pl Name Sex/Age Club Seed Time Final Time Points ================================================================================== 15 ANCM 'A' X200-239 ANCM 2:35.00 2:27.58 0.00 1) Roddin, Julie (F36) 2) Roddin, Jeffrey H (M43) 3) Roddin, Hugh J (M70) 4) Roddin, Ruth A (F69) 36.66(36.66) 1:10.45(33.79) 1:45.62(35.17) 2:27.58(41.96) Looking at this data, we got the exact same place and nearly the same finish time as the relay with Jill. More remarkable is the fact that my parents combined splits were only 0.25 slower in 2012 than the relay in 2000. I'm 0.25 slower today than I was last week so this is astounding! I guess that is a long winded way of saying, yes, to the question... :)
