Starts/Flip Turns = how much time saved on a 50y free/ 50 br

So far I have yet to do a race pace 50y fr/50y br off the blocks or using flip turns for the fr. I am able to do repeats at 33-35 on fr fairly easily from push off and an open turn. What should I be looking at for a full out 50y with all the bells and whistles? I guess my real question is how much time does the start and the flip turn save you?

  • So last night I couldn't sleep... its only 5 days till my meet and i'm already dreaming every night about it. While I was up I was looking over times from a few meets. The one I'm doing this weekend and the state meet for IL last year. What I noticed is that every first 50 is almost 1.5-3 seconds faster than the next splits. I assume this is related to starting off the blocks vs flip turns etc? That being said would one be able to assume they can easily save 1.5-2 seconds then when starting from the blocks vs in the water and a push off? Depends on how clean your entry is and a few other factors, but my block start gives me easily 2-3 secs advantage in the first 50, if not 3-5 secs... fast 50s for me in practice are 35-36 secs from push off, but 31-32 off the blocks; I'm a slow twitch guy, so that makes a difference I'm sure (i.e., taking longer to get up to speed off a push start).
