About to get on a plane, throwing goggles and suit in. Anybody know of pools in the neighborhood (ideally that don't cost astonishing amounts of cash to use)?

Asphalt Green is about half a mile from the 92nd Street Y and it is a MUCH better pool. (Neither one is in midtown though; both are on the upper East Side.)
I have tried and failed to find a reasonably priced pool in midtown on multiple trips. However, that was before Hannah started her 40 pools effort. I don't know if there is a pool that works for you, but check out http://40pools.wordpress.com as she swam in many of the pools around NYC. I usually content myself with hotel room yoga and walks around the city for exercise when I am there.
Bearcat masters allows out-of-towners to drop-in for free. The pool is located at Baruch college on 24th and Lexington if you're interested.

It isn't midtown but it's cheap: Riverbank State Park has an olympic-sized pool. Daily drop-in rate is around $3. They keep the pool temps fairly warm though.
