2012 SCM Top Ten Lists

The preliminary TT lists are posted for the 2012 SCM season, which ran Jan 1 thru Dec 31. http://www.usms.org/comp/tt/ You can also look here to see all the times at once rather than for one age-group/gender www.usms.org/.../PRELIM_SCM_12.pdf Please review for accuracy and send corrections to Topten@usms.org or to me via PM.
  • He was hiding under the bulkhead and pushed off at the 125! Pretty funny. Congratulations! You seem like you really have stepped up your training in the last year or so. Thanks, Jack. I have tried to be pretty consistent over the past few years, and my times have suffered only a bit of decay if you correct for the outlawing of the body kayak speed suits that women still get to wear. In some ways, I feel I have been a beneficiary of the FINA suit change rule. I am reasonably hirsute everywhere but my head, therefore shaving does provide a bit of benefit that less hairy fellows don't get. I don't know if some swimmers quit after the body suits were outlawed, but for whatever reason it does seem that my placements in the TT have gone up even if my times aren't quite as fast. Last year, when I was still in the 55-59 age group for SCY, may have been the only time I've made the TT in my last year of an age group. Not sure who is aging up this year. We might get one more year before Jack Groselle leads a vanguard of superstars into our already McConica-Colella-Trevisan-Shead-Shaw-Stark-dense cohort of superstar competitors! (Sorry if I have left out people in events I don't swim and therefore don't consider my competitors!)

Dang, people really slow down at 50, or maybe they just don't bother racing distance events. Nice. Have you seen Argo by any chance?

Nice. Have you seen Argo by any chance? Not yet. Why?
  • Interesting esoterica for regular readers of the forums: 400 SCM free 3 That Guy 39 PSM Pacific Northwest 4:27.76 4 James A Adams 35 HMS Inland Northwest 4:28.93 800 SCM free 5 James A Adams 35 HMS Inland Northwest 9:36.00 6 That Guy 39 PSM Pacific Northwest 9:43.20 Nice to see a friendly rivalry that is not too lopsided one way or t'other! I do see that James also made the 200 free, and That Guy didn't; however That Guy was 2nd in the 1500 and James 10th. A curious mix of inconsistent speed and endurance performances.
  • Congratulations to That Guy and James (or, James and That Guy)!!! :applaud:
  • Thanks everybody, and good swims Fresnoid. Our 800 and 1500 times you see there all came from the same 1500 race. The 800 times were split requests. James stopped for a break at the 800, noodled a 50, and then finished out his 1500. And our rivalry extends to more than just distance free. It's pretty much every event, though James has the advantage in breaststroke, and I have the advantage in backstroke. Last fall we actually tied in the 50y free at Bainbridge Island, though at the end of the season for that event you won't find our times among the top 10... or 20... or 50... or probably even 100.

I had a few times as well from Canadian Nats in the 200 Free/400 Free (and others) that would've been faster than my USMS rankings times, but they didn't count for Top Ten rules/regulations with (non)measurements (not) taken. T.G.'s distance freestyle seems to have really taken off in the past year or so, and we had quite a dual at my home masters meet in Wenatchee a month ago. In that race, I was ahead through the 2 to 300, he was ahead at the 500 & 1000, and after talking myself out of quitting early, I managed to pull even about the 1500, and it was a battle of keeping the food in our stomachs for the grind to the 1650. I.M. Events are a pretty equal battle as well. I tend to take mine out faster than him in the Fly, but the Back tends to ride his direction a bit. *** (in the IMs) tends to be about equal, and the Free he tends to have a come from behind that almost no one can stop, so we have some pretty good battles too. Fly = pretty much equal in the sprint flys, 200 Fly is hit or miss on what kind of day we're both having, but basically considered equals. Back = T.G. is king *** = (2012 Top Ten in the 100 and 200 SCM ***) It's all good to talk and joke about it here...but in the meets it's no holds barred competition to the end...then it's back to the joking around again.
