I just came across this Lifehacker post which references some virtual workout buddy websites. They look gym-oriented to me. I was wondering if anyone knows about virtual swim workout buddy options. (If there's nothing around, maybe we could put something together?)

I use fitocracy.com personally to log all my running, lifting and swimming. I can definitely see it as having the potential as a virtual workout buddy for swimming! It has a fair amount of options for entering swimming workouts but it can definitely be improved. It would be cool to see a huge influx of swimmers to lead it that way.
