hat you'll need:
Amazon.com: Apple iPod shuffle 2GB Slate NEWEST MODEL: MP3 Players & Accessories make sure everything works before you try to waterproof it as it will completely void all'warranties and of course do this at your own risk.
Syringe 1cc Luer Slip Tip Sterile (Pack of 10): Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific might not need this as you can use the tip that comes with the next item I will link, although I think this works better
Novagard G624 Dielectric Silicone Compound, Mil-S-8660C, 5.3 oz Tube: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific I actually got mine at frys. You'll need one made for using on electronic components, pretty sure this one is fine (or maybe the G662 version), but wasn't what I actually used.
I'd do this in a nice warm area. Get some of the dielectric grease into the syringe and then inject the dielectric grease into the iPod shuffle via its headphone jack. Do this repeatedly because you need to be sure to fill up all spaces in the iPod shuffle with the dielectric grease. Leave any void and it may allow water in. I used a hair blower to heat up the iPod shuffle and then stand it up hoping to get the grease to settle better and then try to inject more grease. I had grease seeping out the back cover plate and the controls felt a bit ore difficult to press, so I was pretty sure I got most of my shuffle packed with the grease.
I have had my iPod shuffle fully submerged in a glass of water now for over 13 hours playing music the whole time. Will leave it there till the battery runs out which should be soon. Recharge and back in it goes. Have also been randomly removing it to skip songs and play with all the control buttons.
Ordered this headphone
Amazon.com: Pyle PWPE10W Marine Sport Waterproof In-Ear Earbud Stereo Headphones for iPod/iPhone/MP3 Player (White): Electronics
And will start lap swimming with my iPod shuffle once I get it.'will update if the iPod dies or after I get more time on it statically testing in a cup of water for 100+ hours and a week or two of lap swimming.

I honestly can't imagine using music during swim training. I find that I'm always concentrating on something, and never just swim up and down. It would just be a distraction to me.

I can completely understand running with an iPod ... how else could you block out the pain, misery and boredom?

I just swim for fitness. Didn't really make the thread to see who likes or doesn't like swimming while listening to music. Hopefully that doesn't sound rude, as I u derstand not everyone is the same.
Some people do like swimming with music. I know I do. I am sure the many people out there that paid $150 or even as much as $300 for an already waterproofed iPod shuffle like it too.
However its a simple process to waterproof the thing and I just wanted to show how, so people can do it themselves for less than half the cost of the least expensive pre-done option. Seriously, its as simple as taking a syringe and pushing down on it. Takes less than 10 minutes to do and people are shelling out $100 (by the least expensive company) to do it because they assume its some super difficult procedure. That is $100 for someone to do the waterproofing,.....to inject silicon into the iPod, does not include the cost of the iPod shuffle.
Had my iPod shuffle testing fully submereged while playing music for 53 hours now. Got my headphones and may swim with it today. Think it is safe to say that even if the companies do it a little different, this way works fine too.

I'm definitely not interested in music while swimming, but it's neat to see how you did this.

Hey there! I saw you response on ifixit! At least I think it was you. I am really interested in what you are doing and I am planning on doing this myself. I asked some questions on ifixit, but i figure you probably werent notified so yu havent seen them yet. Anyways, heres what I said:
hey imported, how did you inject the grease through the headphone jack? I am planning on attempting this modification. Also, in your suggested improvements you suggested the conformal coating. Would you inject that with a syringe as well? And how would yo suggest cleaning it out of the headphone jack? Also, I don't quite understand you about the rubber mate? Sorry for the numerous questions. I just want to do this right! I think you are so right about these companies. What a rip off! BTW, how is your shuffle holding up?
Can you answer these for me? Thanks.

I use a Finis SWIMP3 while I swim. I find that it helps to push myself. It keeps my mind off of how difficult my workout is by distracting me from the physical discomfort. I believe I work harder and swim faster when I use it.
