Looking for some new ideas for my upcoming mile swim on Nov 22 for time. I have put in the yardage. Form is solid. I a middle distance guy who swims better mid to later in a practice. Not a sprinter nor distance guy
What should I be thinking about during the swim?
I swam a 1500 this weekend, so let me tell you what really went through my head:
1st 500
Dang, I'm hitting my stroke count perfectly
Breathing feels awesome and legs are the perfect amount of lightness
I don't know why people moan about this race ... it's sublime
Somewhere between the 500 and 700
Maybe I should've taken Katie up on her offer to count for me
I wish it wasn't so sunny so that I could see the pace clock and then I could figure out where I am in the race
Oh crap! I'm supposed to be counting my strokes.
Focus, man, focus
Precisely at the 750
Mother of god, why didn't I do any situps, crunches or core work this fall? These turns are starting to hurt.
Oh crud, my stroke count is now 15
800
Man, it was fun last year when I swam the 1500, but just did an 800 split request and got to loaf at this point
Why is my stroke count already 16?
Well, at least the guy next to me has a counter and I can see where I am.
Oh, damn, that means I still have 700 to go.
Over the next 300
Better start breathing more. Didn't Gary Hall Senior once promote a breathing pattern where you breathed at some point every stroke? If it's good enough once in a while, why not breathe whenever the h*** I feel like?
While I'm at it, let's try practically rolling onto our back for a huge gulp of air on that last breath into the turn.
At the 1300
Yes, I will finish ... I think ...
Let's count our strokes again ... oh my god, 18?
Better conserve whatever energy I have so I can actually use my legs on the last 100.
At the finish
All that pain for a lousy 1 second drop?
I am never doing this stupid, stupid race again.
How can a 1500 pool swim hurt so much more than a 4K open water swim?
I am not swimming any more freestyle today.
Thank you, Kurt, for swimming in the 1st heat so that my decline in pace, form and function over the race was not noticeable when compared to your beautiful, perfectly even split race. I had you at the 200, man
30 minutes after the finish and cool-down (done backstroke & breaststroke) when talking with my coach
I didn't realize half the things I need to work on.
Dang! He's got some good pointers.
Maybe, just maybe, if I work on those, I could swim a better race next year ;)
