Why would you pick up your gold medal at USMS Nationals if you knew that you aren't #1 in the nation? Aren't you considered a National Champion by winning there?
Why would you pick it up? Because you won it at that meet. It doesn't mean that everyone who ever swims that event was at that meet, though. Twice I have gotten 2nd at Nationals with pretty good times but there were also only 2 of us in the event. When top 10 came out, I was around 8th. So 7 people who swam faster than me didn't attend Nationals. It happens. I watch the event rankings more than the Nationals results.
