When I was a member of another USAS team in the same pool I heard of the coach texting borderline texts to a teen girl. I met with him privately and told him to knock it off or he would be in trouble. The teen left the team a few weeks later and a few months later he was hit with a lawsuit for hiring a known sex offender to coach the teens on that team. That team still employs the coach I warned. That team I would have a problem being a part of. I left.
This story appeared today in our UK newspapers.
An unfortunate swimming coach sent an embarrassing text to all of the contacts on his phone by mistake, including family members.

Even adults shouldn't sext, I guess.
I can't help but feel sorry for this coach, somewhat a victim of inept use of technology. And what if he had been sending out a message to his team and was the victim of some salacious spelling "corrections?"
What was once a "gray area" became a "slippery slope" and is not blowing up.
Yet here is how things went down at the USAS Convention HOD:
"USA SWIMMING CONVENTION: A coach can still date their swimmers if over 18-year-old!"

What a mess.I was going to throw up my hands at the complications of trying to be fair and protect the swimmers, but then I thought"the minimum age for drinking is 21 in most states,so how about coaches can't "date" anyone under 21."
Yes it is, but I'd say that it's regardless of age of consent variations (16 etc.) it violates the coach-athlete relationship. Like a doctor-patient thing. It's there to protect everyone.

What an unfortunate incident.
Maybe it's a good idea for coaches to only have cell #s for the parents of underage swimmers and not the swimmers numbers.
