OK - the Trials have just begun and the Olympics are a mere weeks away.
Michael Phelps has said this is his last Olympics and he'll retire from swimming after this event.
So => What do you think he'll probably do? Right now he trains by swimming at least twice a day and probably lifts weights too.
So - will he probably take a week off after the games and not swim? A month? Longer?
What do high-profile swimmers like this do when they retire. I know Rowdy Gaines is a champion masters swimmer but I'm just curious what happens.
I'm guessing he'll have to stay in some kind of shape to work on his foundation and attend public appearances.
I definitely do NOT see him becoming a commentator like Rowdy did after retirement. Phelps isn't the most articulate or intelligent athelete I have ever heard speak. :afraid:
Possibly not the most articulate, although he seems fine to me, and he is probably the greatest athlete any of us will hear speak. They don't come around that often.
Depends how things go for him in London. Right now it looks like Lochte is likely to rule the pool across the pond.
After the Olympics, Michael will take a break from training and keep in shape. He will do his post olympics commitments. Spend a lot of time in Vegas, NYC, Miami, & LA. Date many beautiful women. In a matter of months or maybe years he'll get bored. He's not likely to find anything where he will be as great as he was in swimming. I would be surprised to see him do a comeback for 2016 or 20

they take all kinds of paths
time will tell
What do high-profile swimmers like this do when they retire. They join US Masters Swimming.
Rumor has it Phelps has his sights set on Jeff Commings’ 25-29 100 IM SCM record.

Oh yeah, that's high on his priority list right now. :D
The cool thing is Michael can probably do about anything he wants when he retires.
I disagree with Elaine, I think Michael presents himself very well and could turn into an interesting and well informed color commentator.
Well, Bobinator, my impression of Phelps just changed after watching the video of his recent Today Show interview. He came off more articulate and mature than he had in any previous interview I had seen. It was an excellent interview! :applaud:
I've been wrong about this sort of thing before. John Kruk, who used to play for the San Diego Padres, wasn't exactly the sharpest tool in the shed. Surprisingly, after retirement, he became a baseball commentator and was hired by ESPN. He has done an outstanding job and has been quite impressive in his new career!
Good luck to Michael Phelps, whatever he decides to do after the Olympics! :cheerleader:

I'm glad you reconsidered Elaine. Phelps is definitely the kind of guy people love to hate. I'm impressed with the fact Phelps is an adhd kid who found focus within the confines of the pool and turned it into something very special. Phelps has made some bad choices in his younger years but he seems to have learned from the mistakes and moved on. Isn't that what life is all about?
