I'm just clearing out all the boxes of my basement and found this old gem: Competitive Swimming Manual: Counsilman: Amazon.com: Books I bought it about 15 years ago and always thought it was brilliant. Does anyone know this book and how dated would you think the methods are? I don't reallly care because training methods of the 70s are still good enough for me but i was just curious if many training methods of the book might be dated compared to today's training methods.

It has some useful seed. That time the main coaching theory was: More you swim - better you swim. As a sprinter I had hard times being coached that way. (For example you may compare that material with David Salo thoughts of short intense workouts concentrated on technique). The book also has some planning theory which is good for the beginning but after finishing studying the book it ought to study other planning options micro- mezo- and macro-cycles. The technique description is on the level of 70s - some things are not valid anymore so I would consider about reading something else for technique description.
