Getting slower

My 100's times are now approx 5 seconds slower than about 14 years ago, when I was relatively new to Masters. Is this "normal?" Has anyone experienced this and then made a comeback? During this time frame, I stopped swimming off and on few a few years. But am now back to practicing regularly with a masters group. I'm hoping to get back to where I was. Is it just a given we will continue to get slower as we age? Or maybe my lack of good practicing has caused my less than great performance recently, and it can be recovered?

  • I have been swimming for 2 years now. The start of the first year I seemed to be faster than at the end of the second year. My training yardage also dropped a little. I will be in my first meet of this year on Saturday. I am not holding my breath (no swimmers pun intended) for a personal best. Life and wife can reek havoc on a practice schedule. I went from a pb 1:01 to 1:04 in my last race. yikes!! I do hope to pick up the pace in my training for my state's games in June and the Huntsman Senior Games in October, lcm, scm respectively. Saturday is a scy. I was close to beating the 1:00 min 100 yds free. I want to say that it's all fun at the meets, and it is, and it's all about the fitness, and it is, but touching the wall before the swimmer next to has its own gratification. Evan if it is an eighty year old lady. Especially if it is a twenty year old swimmer.(It has happened....once, the twenty something scenario) I did get my share of ribbons and even some medals mostly thirds and some seconds. I would have to jump up about 2 age groups and some events 3 to take firsts consistently. So after I get over my embarrassment I think that maybe there is still a chance of getting faster and older. It is fun and practice beats t.v. in the evenings. Wow! 1 st event, 100 IM improved pb by 4 sec. Second event, 200 free, beat pb by 4 sec. 3 rd event 100 back. few hundredths of pb. Still embarrassing times. 50 free within hundreths again. 5 th event 100 free. I felt way tight and stiff. (age? cut in practice time? ) 1 second faster than worse time and 2 secs. slower than pb. :dedhorse: My wife now says even with nights at home I can still improve. I doomed. I will break the minute barrier this year on the 100 free.
