Is there a "correct" way to face when doing a flip turn? Most folks seem to turn, or face to their left, while some go right. I can't see where it makes any difference, except when circle swimming counter clockwise, those turning right appear a little "crossed up".

how about not twisting at all and flipping directly on your back and utilizing the twist after you push off, this way you can accommodate both sides if need to be. Many beginner swimmers get confused with the twists, so going straight is a much better option.
