Is there a "correct" way to face when doing a flip turn? Most folks seem to turn, or face to their left, while some go right. I can't see where it makes any difference, except when circle swimming counter clockwise, those turning right appear a little "crossed up".

I grew up circling clockwise, so flip facing right, my daughter circles counter clockwise and flips facing left. Its what works best for you and what you're used to.
And yes, I still flip right even when I have to circle counter-clockwise, and I'm sure it does look weird, I also think I swim further due to the extra loops at each wall.
