Is it faster to swim breaststroke with your head above the water during the glide or just below the surface of the water during the glide?

definitely below the water. In addition to keeping your hips us as was already mentioned, think of regular speed boat with a huge wave around its bow when going through the water (head out of the water) and a very smooth submarine under the surface of the water (head in the water). Which do you think has less drag?
