Parents
  • It is for the best if some would focus on technical instruction and sportsmanship instead of acting like sports is a surrogate Big Brother program. That's an interesting take and very good points. Of course it's difficult for kids to understand what type of coaching is best for them and subsequently communicate that. Just like an overbearing parent, some coaches can take on a similar role, whether intentional or not. I agree with the author that many of these necessary changes can also be unfortunate for coaches with good intentions. One of my head coaches used to give me rides to morning practices and then to school because both my parents had to work. It was completely out of his way, but there was no other way I would make the practices otherwise. It's amazing what some coaches are willing to sacrifice with only the best interest of the athlete in mind. I feel very lucky for the coaches I've had through my development.
