I was not a victim of sexual abuse nor did I ever witness such things. I am unsure if the following comments are relevant but it is one perspective.
Many times I felt coaches went much too far pushing a personal relationship with me or wanting to be too psychological. Some wanted to see themselves as Life Teachers but to me it was about the sport and I would've appreciated more technical instruction. I already had a good father and a loving family. I could've done with fewer people acting like I was an orphan -- my father traveled internationally but still made at least one game/meet per month. In layer years many coaches seemed almost personally validated when I would improve, or treat it as a personal affront when I was stuck in a plateau. I got really tired of these motivational manipulations. Yet I persisted, put my athletic abilities to solid use, made the most of certain opportunities, and then moved onto other phases of life.
Obviously my complaints are minor compared to victims of sexual abuse, but certain over-invested coaches really left me with bad memories. It is for the best if some would focus on technical instruction and sportsmanship instead of acting like sports is a surrogate Big Brother program.
