he first must get through the USA 2012 Olympic Trials
His 2012 OT schedule should the same as 2008. I'm very sure he'll swim the 100 free prelims and semi's, doubt he'll swim the 1 fr finals, because it splits his 2 bk & 2 IM semis. I'm sure he could cruise his 2 bk semi and still make finals, he could punch a fast 1 free in finals, but he's not likely to make top 2 and might not want to endanger his 2 IM. It's a tough schedule. Plus consider warm ups, warm downs, interviews and showing up to the ready room for each race, he's going to be super busy. He'll be very fast and well prepared. The difference is 100 back, with Piersol out, he's got a better chance to make top 2 but USA's got a lot of really great 100 backstrokers & so far Lochte seems better at 200's.

100 bk & 100 free are the 2 big questions for Lochte.

Knowing what we all know of Lochte, I think he will make the team for 4x100 free, but as Ande points out making the 4x100 medley will be tough. He then has to think about his schedule and find more individual events.
I just can't see it. I can't see him taking it all on, and I can't see the US winning the 4x100 free. The one thing that would change my mind on it is having 2 of the biggest racers there are on the team in Phelps and Lochte - even if they aren't specialists. Here's another good analysis -

I'm really enjoying reading people's comments on Lochte 2012.
Random late night thoughts while I'm tired...
In my opinion, he wants to beat The King most of all.
He'll swim
200 fr
200/400 im
200 bk
4 x 200 fr
4 x 100 fr (makes top 6)
Sidenotes- Will Phelps swim the 400 im? Will Phelps swim the 100 bk? Huge wild card here.
200 fr is insanely competitive. 5-6 guys are literally within tenths of a second of one another.
I have a feeling Lochte will enter a ton of events at Trials and see how well he can handle it. If we see him start scratching events then we'll know he's tiring.
i think he will also swim 200 fly

I think you are right. I'm changing my mind. Up to a couple days ago, I thought his event schedule at Shanghai would be a really good realistic indicator for London. But now his 100 fly is a 52 low. He's was just .09 behind Phelps at this Grand Prix meet!
Tyler McGill went 51.95 in France last week. I think the #2 spot on the Olympic roster is still his to lose.

It looks like I am going to go down to Florida to interview Mr. Lochte for a Men's Health article in early April. Not absolutely sure what the gist of this is supposed to be about yet, but I suspect the theme will be whether he can set a new standard for total number of medals won, or come close, and if so how.
If you could ask Ryan some questions in person, what would you ask him?
Plus if anybody has ideas about why he is so extraordinarily good, I'd really be grateful to hear them. I read that both his parents were swimming coaches, and he got his perfect strokes from his mom and his training and stamina from his father. (As far as perfect form goes, I am sure this has changed quite a bit from his youth--was it his mother who redefined this, or some other coach?)
When you think of human accomplishment on the bell shaped curve, he is so far out there on the right hand margins--well, any world record holder is, I suppose, but he and Phelps are just incredible specimens, the Secretariats of swimming.
They are beyond even the top 1 percent of the top 1 percent. How do people get to this rarefied position?
If you could ask Ryan some questions in person, what would you ask him?
I know he trains really hard and puts in serious mileage in the pool, but I'd be curious if he does anything really technique oriented, drills, etc? And we know he's a great underwater kicker, so it would be interesting to hear what he does to work on that aspect of his swimming. Does he use a monofin at all?
Jim, I am as stumped as you are! The interview should be quite interesting and the resulting article a good read. Will you please post it here when it's published? Thanks!
If you could ask Ryan some questions in person, what would you ask him?
I would ask him about swimming in Phelps' shadow. I don't know what kind of an answer he would give, but it looks from the outside like that is a big part of his motivation.
