2012: Resolutions!

My resolutions: 1. Last month, I discovered "Go the Distance" and inputted all my yardage from the past year. With a week and a half left in the year, I have put in 660 miles. Looking at the top of the GTD results, I see that a "Don Tatzin" has the most mileage of anybody this year with 1685. That is almost 3 million yards. For 2012, I resolve to top 3 million yards and the GTD list. 2. Get under :50 in the 100 yard freestyle. PB stands at 53.13 from last July. My current season goal for the event is even harder, but that's between me and my coach. 3. Get under :23 in the 50 yard freestyle. PB stands at 24.58 from last July. Current season goal is even harder, " "... The NY resolution makes for a nice little stepping stone. 4. Attain a QT for a Grand Prix, even if it's not for this current GP season. 5. Become the best I possibly can within the confines of Jan 01 12 to Jan 01 13. I have no idea how ridiculous some of these might be, but with Darth Real Life all sorted out and logistics of classes and job all worked out, I still have a lot of extra time that can be spent at pools, for which I am very thankful. If you doubt me, I forgive you in advance (but I won't forget your words). What are your swimming New Year's resolutions? And if you don't believe in NY resolutions, then what do you think you can do to improve your swimming?

I'm going to try and be more patriotic at swim meets.

After dealing with a total ankle fracture one month into 2011 I'm settling for more modest resolutions for 2012. It took forever before I could do anything but float in the pool, though I am now back to swimming laps a couple of times a week in additon to water aerobics-don't judge,it makes for better swimming afterward. I don't care about the amount I swim as much as the quality. I want to be consistent and stick to a modest but steadily improving training regiment. I want to regain and improve my stamina, fix my *** stroke technique,as it still feels "off" due to nerve damage and over all just apreciate what I can do,not sweat what I can't. Outside of the pool I'd like to get back to running 4-6 miles, without pain(in the leg that is-the rest will hurt regardless),just so I have some balance to my workout....and maybe shed a few pounds along the way.

I don't really do "resolutions" exactly, but here is what I wrote down earlier this week as it pertains to swimming next year: Finish establishing sustainable habits for lifelong fitness Become reasonably familiar with modern swimming - nutrition, dryland, strokes, rules, strategies, knowledge, etc. - and apply what is relevant to me Open water: Complete five sanctioned swims of 1500m or more, including at least one 5k SCY/SCM: Complete five timed/legal swims of 500/400 FR, 200 BA, 200 BR, 200 FL, and 400 IM Postal: Complete any five challenges (i.e., 250 miles for Go The Distance)

All I want for this new year is to do my part in winning the high school league championship! 1:55.45 in a 200 yard free, 5:30.00 in a 500, 25.70 in a 50, and a 55.10 100 yard free should do it!

You do realize these are contradictory goals, right? If you want to swim fast sprints, forget about goal #1. That'll just make you slow. My resolution is to not do stupid stuff that causes injuries. I somehow fell off the wagon the last two moths of 2011 on this score. Corrected for language usage?
  • Yowzer! You are ambitious! I wonder if goals #1 and #2 are compatable? Don't hurt yourself! I just looked at the scribbles on the back of my envelope, and they said, "3,000,000 / 366 = average over 8,000 yards a day, every day, for a year!" Don't hurt yourself! My resolutions (copy/paste/edit): 1. Keep it fun. Still be in swimming at the end of 2012. If it's not fun, I won't do it. So keep it fun! 2. Participate in at least one meet in each of SCY, LCM, and SCM. 3. Participate in SCY nats. Greenville is close & I can get there. I will try to get to LCM nats if I can. 4. Participate in my state's Senior Games sequence, regional and states. 2012 is a qualifying year for 2013 nats, so this is necessary to set up for next year. I know most USMS swimmers don't go to Sr. Games, but it really is a fun meet. 5. Times & Events. Faster than last year! I did a good job in 2011, with new PBs in 100 back, 400 IM, and several other events; I also swam the 200 fly short & long course for the first time. I want to be driven by fun, not by times, so I'm not setting any specific goals, and will be delighted by any PB in any event.
  • I don't do New Year's resolutions, but it is time to set a new goal in Go The Distance. After analyzing this year's training volume (with heavier weighting given to the last few months of the year) and thinking carefully about what type of yardage volume I can sustain for a whole year, I have decided upon 1,234,567. :)
  • I just looked at the scribbles on the back of my envelope, and they said, "3,000,000 / 366 = average over 8,000 yards a day, every day, for a year!" Don't hurt yourself! It's that leap day that's going to put him over the top! I have to say a goal of three million yards borders on insanity. If you break it up by week it works out to more than 57,000 yards per week. If you want an off day each week that means averaging just a hair under 10K per day. Good luck!
  • My New Year resolution is to eat more chocolate. I don't think I get enough in my current diet.
