Broadening shoulders at 22 years old and gaining endurance.
Former Member
I'm a 5'5 male (._.). Will swimming broaden my shoulders at this age still? I was on the high school swim team many years ago, but was never any good at it due to my endurance. My shoulders are wider than most guys my height, but I'd like it to be a little bit bigger still. I would like to get back into swimming, but the problem is my endurance is absolutely horrible. During swim team I had to take so many breaks, it was bad. I actually have no clue why my endurance never really improved. I was swimming with some people the other day who barely swam or worked out and they can swim longer than I can. I don't know whats up. I get tired too easily. This was one of the reasons why I chose weight lifting to stay in shape, because I didn't have to run or swim. I have a pretty nice body from weight lifting, but I think I would like to swim as well. I think I would look good if I weight lifted and swam. 300 meters continuous is all about I can do. When I was in the swim team, 500 meters is a bout all I can do.
hey Zoi Poy,
you asked:

Swimming might broaden your shoulders but not like weight lifting will. Our shoulders are the over all impression of our
bone structure,
muscles Delts, Lats, Traps, Pecs, biceps, and triceps &
posture.
There's plenty of books on how to gain strength size and mass by lifting weights. Weight lifting won't change your bone structure. You could flare your lats and hold your arms out slightly, but it's probably better to appear relaxed and confident, than a poser trying to make his shoulders appear bigger than they are.
We have a tendancy to be our own worst critics. Some folks focus on body parts they're dissaticefied with. I suggest adding a dose of self acceptance and self esteem. Your body is the only body you're ever going to get, it's amazing and wonderful, treat it well, it needs to last a long time. You can also shift your self image and what you believe to be true about yourself.

It might be your endurance and conditioning but it's probably your technique. It sounds like you are trying too hard. You need to learn how to relax and swim smoothly and efficiently, then do tougher sets to build up your endurance.
Make a video of you swimming freestyle
Front & away angles, from the side, and underwater if you have a friend with an underwater video camera
Put it or them on youtube.
Paste the link here and ask folks to watch your technique and offer comments

notice how the swimmers head is down, his pulls are relaxed long and smooth and his legs are together and still till he does small fast efficient kicks to balance out his stroke.
If you swam like that, you would not get as worn out.
Copy that technique when you swim.
Hope this helps,
Ande
Thanks. I'll see tomorrow night if my technique is off. It looks like it because I may be pushing it too hard. I always go faster than everyone else for some reason so I will probably have to slow it down. I notice in that video that guy takes it easy and he still moves smoothly. I'm not like that at all, I always peddle hard.
I'm actually fine with my shoulders, it would just be nicer if its wider. They are fairly wide for someone my height, but I see those Olympic swimmers with really broad shoulders, makes me want it haha. I'd rather have narrow shoulders and be tall though. But yeah, I'm fine with my build so far.
Wow, I've never thought so much about my shoulders. Then again, when we were house hunting and looking at older houses with narrow staircases, it was evident that my swimmers shoulders might be an issue when I knocked a picture off the wall!
