New to competition

I only compete in the summer at regional and state competition. I am also a runner and race most weekends. I'd like to begin to compete in swimming but I live in a small college town in mid Pa. and it's a long drive to any USMS meets.. what to do? I broke records in recent state meet as a 70 year old female. I swim daily.:help:

  • Hi Judy! I am not all that familiar with USMS events in your part of the country, but I know for sure there are several excellent meets in the Washington, D.C. area every year, which is about two hours south of you. Also there are fairly frequent meets in the suburbs west of Philly, about an hour east. (Where I live, a meet within a two hour drive is considered "close".) You also have the non-USMS Keystone State Games nearby (senior event here), which is held almost every summer in the Hershey/Harrisburg area. Check the USMS Calendar of Events periodically (here), and search the Delaware Valley, Maryland, and Potomac Valley LMSCs for the kind of meets you want to enter. Right now there are only two pool events listed, but in a couple of months there should be more. If you're a distance swimmer, you can also participate in USMS long distance "postal" events, where you swim in your own pool, and mail in the results. Hope that helps!
