Hey everyone, lurked around for a few days reading through threads and what not and decided to join/post. I am 17 (18 this coming weekend) and I really want to get into swimming. I've always had an in ground pool in my back yard since was born so I have been swimming since I was practically in diapers however I have never really looked to refine or focus on my stroke or technique. I went to the local Y with my friend a while back who is also my age and has been competitively swimming for quite some time. We swam around and I was messing around with both freestyle as well as breaststroke and he was givning me some tips and I really enjoyed it. I feel like I would really enjoy competitive swimming but I feel like since I'm starting at such a late age when compared to kids who have been swimming competitively since they were 10 or 11, that going out for my schools team this coming fall (senior year of high school) wouldn't work out too well. I'm not over weight by any means, I just need a lot of practice on the freestyle and breaststroke. What kind of workouts could i do in my pool each day to help me out? I know I sound like a huge noob but I'm legitimately interested and hey you have to start somewhere, right?

Good for you for taking up a new sport.
In addition to the other recommendations here, having an experienced swim buddy will really help you. It seems like you may have that taken care of. Swimming with other people really helps you stay motivated and can help you with your skills.
Senior year of high school a friend of mine joined the swim team and in just a single season became phenomenally better at swimming. At the first meet he swam a 34 second 50 Free. By the end of the season he was swimming a 26 sec 50 free.
Good Luck!
