Swimmers Elbow (lateral epicondylitis)

Anyone have advice for managing/healing swimmers elbow?  I'm early 60's, recently upped my swimming and am having lateral elbow pain after swims.  It doesn't hurt while swimming but tends to wake me with pain at night and also is extremely tender if bumped.

I'm hoping to consult a swim coach on my technique but would appreciate any other exercises/advice.

  • I had a bout with this a couple years ago. In my case it didn’t really keep me awake at night, and it didn’t really hurt while swimming. But, it did present itself a bit more with my upper body weight on my forearms when riding my road bike. Overall, it was really just more of an annoyance. I treated it the standard tendon injury treatments of ice, self-massage, and NSAIDs. Took a while, but eventually went away. — Dan

  • Thanks to both of you for your replies. In case it's of use to others, I've been following advice from the website below as well as icing and using topical NSAID's and it's improving fast.  Also got the coaching advice to make sure to engage the muscles of the whole shoulder and lats rather than muscling through with the arm and that also seems to make a big difference.  Most of you probably know to do this but I'm new to real swimming

  • One other thing that I meant to mention is that it’s possible, as was my case, that the original injury wasn’t caused by swimming. For me, I’m almost positive that it was caused by some heavy duty yard work I’d been doing…swinging implements (axe, sickle) while clearing underbrush and saplings from an area of my yard. — Dan

  • Try a forearm Air Cast strap the attaches just below the elbow with the bubble on the muscle there.  Have had “tennis” elbow tendinitis from work related injuries and it helps. Wear it tight and like 24-7 hrs a day, it takes time.
