I'm thinking about training to compete in the Summer Nationals this year (I'm chubby and slow right now so maybe not :) ) and maybe planning a family vacation at the same time as my events are spread out between days. Is there any fun things to do in Maryland to entertain the parents and have some fun?
You are close to DC. There is more than enough fun things to do that city. Baltimore is also a great place to tour and have good seafood.

There is LOTS to do. Wash DC is right around the corner from the University, and Baltimore is also nearby. Several beach resort towns are also about 2 hours away. Annapolis, MD, home of the US Naval academy is about 30 minutes. I promised my teenager that we would make time to take a tour. And we will likely make a trip to the beach :bliss:
Yes, that's typical. The attendance for all USMS Nationals is in Appendix F (pages 190-191) of the Rulebook and available online at www.usms.org/.../appf.pdf
Including 1025 for Maryland, the Summer Nationals average since 1990 is 1002 (the median is 1016). For you stats lovers, the average deviation is 162.
For Spring Nationals, the average since 1990 is 1721 (median is 1738) and average deviation is 238.
For what it's worth, the total for both Nationals this year (3274) is the highest since 1990 (perhaps longer, but my spreadsheet starts at 1990). The average total for both meets is 2683, so this is definitely a huge year for our Nationals.

The university has an outdoor rec facility (with pool). Does anyone know if this will be available for use during the meet for the families being dragged along?

You would have to call the recreation department to inquire about the use of the facility to non-members. I don't know what their guest policy may be. Here is the website:

I just called. Since we are coming in for the swim meet, we are able to sponsor ourselves as guests at a rate of $7 per person per day.
