Postmeet Illness

Several Illinois Masters, Palos Masters and St Louis Masters came down with severe gastroenteritis symptoms on Monday following LC Nationals in Cleveland. We did all go out to Frank and Pauly's Restaurant Saturday night, but it seems like a long delay for it to be food-poisoning. I wondered if anyone who did not eat with us on Saturday became ill in this same time frame. The list of casualties is now 14 with severe diarrhea/vomiting/dehydration and 5 less severe cases. The Cleveland Health Department will be doing inspections today of the CSU swimming pools and Frank and Pauly's Restaurant. Please let me know if anyone else had similar problems.
  • Today, August 23, the Cleveland Health Department inspected the natatorium, many other areas of the facility and the pool maintenance records. No problems or concerns...... :)
  • Hi Mary P. and Mary W.: I developed "cellulitis" on my thigh and somewhat on lower leg one week after I returned...again, the beginning might have been an insect bite. Had the most terrible flu-like symptoms on the Friday after, then the fever, leg inflammation and swelling for several days until gigantic antibiotics kicked in. Am good now, hope you and everyone is well now, too. JP

I had a strange illness starting Aug. 19, day after meet ended. We ate at Frank & Pauly's, but my symptoms were not exactly like the others mentioned. I didn't have vomiting, but was somewhat dehydrated, very tired (my back was sensitive to the touch, as if severely strained), nauseous, light-headed, and slightly dizzy, with a low fever (96). My blood pressure was very low (109/49) when I went to the doctor (Sports Medicine/Gyn, MD) Wednesday. He gave me Vitamins/Mineral IV, and attributed it to exhaustion (from the meet). However, the light-headedness and extreme tiredness continued for a week, so I went to my General Practicioner (MD also) and he said it could be a mild case of West Nile. That might make sense, as I had been at the Louisville, Ky. meet a week before Cleveland and had 8 mosquito bites there. The newspapers here advised that the Center for Disease Control did not want cases reported that did not involve a high fever and a rash, so mine was not reported. Both doctors told me to rest, not swim, for a week or more. I did, and I'm fine now. :)
