Gender and competition

I think it is a sign how dead the forum is that no one has commented on the new interim rule on assigned gender in competition.

If I understand it, one can swim in the heats with your identified gender but National Recognition (Top Ten, All American , Records) would be by gender assigned at birth. Local meets would follow local local laws so it is possible in some jurisdictions transwomen could win medals as women. Interestingly it looks to me that Nationals will follow the local jurisdiction rules.

My question is what about transmen. If I am understanding it they would be eligible for Top Ten etc as a woman even though they would certainly have higher testosterone and at some meets wouldn't swim with the women.

I think this overall is an improvement, but certainly controversial. and probably a work in progress(it is interim)

  • My understanding of the terminology is that trans men are females who identify as males and trans women were born men and identify as femaile. So a trans male competing with the men is not a problem because that person is at a disadvantage. A trans female competing against people who were born female is the problem.

The problem with the interim policy is that birth certificates can be changed in some places and it will be hard to detect that they have been changed. So a trans female could indeed swim with the women and have an advantage if she was born in a place where her birth certificate could be changed from male to female.
