Early registration is open for the Kingdom Swim, Lake Memphremagog, VT, July 9, 2011. The fee goes up January 1, 2011.
www.kingdomswim.org
I note that 20 people of the maximum 100 10-milers have already registered and paid.
Adult options for 2011 are 1 mile, 3 miles, 6 miles, 10 miles.
For those who need to qualify (and the times are generous, meaning even I qualified, LOL!), the organizers are holding a separate swim about 3 weeks in advance.
:)
Sure! Most important is getting some experience in OW before you try a bigger meet (Kingdom Swim offers a 1 mile for adults, but the cost of the entry fee plus travel plus motel room scarcely justifies doing the 1 mile. However, 1 mile might also be the ticket to fun). The most important is getting some experience in OW first. Swimming with buddies, a small community swim - it doesn't have to be USMS sanctioned - anything to get the feel of it. Good sources for meets are www.openwaterchicago.com and www.10kswimmer.com. If you are able to more closely specify where you are in PA, others on the board might know ppl you could contact for buddy swimming on your own. Or Phil Wilson, the organizer of Kingdom Swim, might know people from your area who have swum the event. Or ask the OW chair of your local LMSC.
Next most important: unlike pool 50s, an OW swim is about going long: mental and physical conditioning for chugging along for an hour or so. For almost all participants, it is not a "race." Some conditioning can be done in a pool with long continuous swims, each time extending a little beyond where you got tired enough to stop the previous time. Conditioning is also built by doing shorter intervals faster, such as a series of broken 500s. We'll get to that in the next lesson. :) During the longer swims, you'll also be discovering where in the duration you tend to get leg cramps, and when to start fluid and electrolyte replacement - also advanced topics that are discussed every OW season on the boards. :)
Phil Wilson, the organizer, sends out a bumper crop of emails about the swim. There may also be some shorter swims in advance for swimmers who need to qualify (basically, do a swim about 2/3 of the planned distance).
Good morning:) Thanks for the great tips;) I live on the border of ny and pa. Right in the middle of the states. I actually swim for Niagra NY team. Did you ever hear of canadaiga lake? (mispelled) That 2 hours away from me. I think I will try to go there first. That way I can see if I like it. I know I prefer pools better but wouldn't mind doing at least one a year. I love long distance I can swim 1 1/2 non stop. About then I start to get a head ache. :anim_coffee:
