West Side Swim Club (Sudbury, MA) will be hosting a one of a kind event on August 28th and 29th, 2010.
Called the Nare Diem, we will be hosting a 24 hour swim that will include 6 4-person relays, 6 2-person relays and 4 solo swims. For each 4 and 2 person team, each member will switch off every hour.
There will be significant cash prizes for the team relay events and prizes for the soloists that are still to be determined by the Nare Diem committee.
Registration details are coming soon but you can follow along at http://www.narediem.com
This event will be open for registration world-wide on or about February 1, 2010. Stay tuned for more details.
Sounds interesting. I hope you are working closely with the sports medicine and science committee as well as the risk management coordinator for USMS.
This is an ambitious event, made more challenging by swimming indoors, in a short course yards pool, during Summer, in the Norhteast. In other words, making it a test of will more than a sporting event.
I think that we will be surprised in the end with who is left and how far they actually were able to swim. To be honest, we are less concerned about the 4 man teams and the soloists than we are with the 2 man teams. After much discussion and debate, the overwhelming sense is that the 2 man team members will undergo the most stress during the 24 hours.
We have plans to mitigate risk at every possible point and intend to do that based on our research into similar swims and with the feedback from an OW marathon swim triple crown soloist who is on our committee.
The Nare Diem committee did meet on Tuesday and made significant progress on the event. We will be updating the web site this weekend and sending out our first mailer to all of you who have registered on our mailing list so far.
We will also update this thread. Thanks and stand by.

I vote for a name change. I think you should call it the:
They Shoot Sea-Horses, Don't They? Swimathon
Me! Me! Meeeeeeee! Pick Me!
This looks great. You might also want to visit this thread about a 24 hr swim they have in Austria every year.

Maybe you could get Gerald to come over from Austria to do it since he's done 2 of them already.

This sounds awful. It's not as though you are striking out for yonder shore, or getting an in-the-round perspective of Manhattan Island.
The t-shirts had better be outstanding.
Not only will there be t-shirts and sweatshirts given out but each swimmer will be receiving a custom Tru-West parka with their name, the date of the swim, the yardage they swam and the inaugural patch.
Website being updated today...I had the flu all weekend... :-(
