tris are expensive and you don't get your own personal motorized escort for 12 hours. many of the captains earn their living as fishing guides. if they couldn't earn a days pay as a swimmers pilot, they would likely make other arrangements.
I agree, it's a lot of money, but it's less than other open water swims that take several hours less to complete. Some of our people are on the water over 14 hours on race day.
