June 20, 2009 – Seventeenth annual Against The Tide one-mile swim, two-mile kayak and three-mile fitness walk to benefit the Massachusetts *** Cancer Coalition. The event will be held at Hopkinton State Park in Hopkinton, MA. This fun and inspirational day brings together swimmers, kayakers and walkers of all ages and abilities to join efforts with MBCC in their mission of eradicating the *** cancer epidemic. Each participant raises a minimum of $150 in contributions to benefit MBCC and may choose to participate in one, two or all three of the events. Visit www.againstthetidembcc.org to register or call 1-800-649-MBCC.
  • That's a lot of money for what is essentially a community "fun" event. How about making it free, and calling it "The Fight Against Obesity"? I would also like to know which orgs and programs benefit from the money collected. A ton of taxpayer dollars and private dollars go to BR CA research as it is. I tracked down the program that receives Swim Across America money in Chicago, and talked to the director of the program. It's a neat program (I have forgotten exactly what, tho' it's probably in my notes), he gives SAA a big public push when possible, and he goes down to the beach to meet and greet the swimmers. It's not some amorphous coalition.
