your only other options would be to try to book a room on your own. then you could get the regular hotel cancellation 48 or 24 hrs before.
Yeah, thought of that. Sites like expedia.com do show show availability. There are definitely hotels that have a large portion of rooms blocked, so they show no availability, but others do. I might book one of these just as a backup.
