One of the big differences in the meets between USA Swimming and USMS is that most of time they have time cuts for eligibility and qualification to swim in USA swimming meets. I know of no qualifing times at the local and zone level in USMS. There is however at the USMS National and FINA World level meets.
Before I would join I would see what meets I would qualify for and would it be worthwile to join. Now with dual sanctioning, I don't really know how many meets that will entail and I would not have to be a USA member to participate in them. If you go to the LSC page on the USA swimming site of the LSC you want to join they will have cutoff times for A, AA, B, and C. Some meets are A, B, C, cuts which means they are open to all just like all of our USMS local and zone meets. I am sure its different for every different LSC in the country.
Good luck and it will be interesting to see what meets you can qualify to swim in the LSC. I believe all USMS members would have to qualify with the Open division time cuts.
Sibleycan. Do you ever see ,old people at these meets ? I never was a Usa Member. But I did join this week to see if I could get in more swim meets in my area. I dont even know what swim meets are avaible. I am no speedster by any means. I am 70 yrs old. So maybe I can get in some unrestricted meets. Dom.:)

I have seen very few older people at meets but, up until just recently, most of the meet sessions we attended were 12 & under. Now that my kids have turned 13, we'll start attending senior/open meets/sessions.
I swam AAU/USS as a kid but I swam USS again from age 30-37 and I swam USMS also. Now I am a full time USMS coach and I have two young masters swimmers (mid-late 20's) who are swimming with the my masters team. As teenagers both swimmers raced against me and told me they referred to me as the old guy who swam fast. They also said they got nervous about racing and losting to an old guy.
As of today, 2/08/06, I have a membership in both groups. My first USA meet is Saturday. I am looking forward to racing again, regardless of the age of the other swimmers.
